The only exception is territories where there are only two races in those territories you must win both races. Capturing a territory consists of winning a majority of the races available in that territory, allowing you to avoid race types you're not entirely confidant in. If you start with an exotic (the Alfa Romeo Brera) you begin in Fortuna and must defeat Wolf and the TFK crew before moving on. If you pick a muscle car (the 1967 Camaro SS) you begin the game in Kempton, and must defeat Angie and the 21st Street crew to move on to the next two sections. However, Silverton, the final area of the city (and home to the best cars), won't open until you've captured the three previous sections. Once you've captured your first section, Fortuna and Kempton will open up for you. You must defeat Kenji and his Bushido crew to move on to other sections of the city. If you pick a tuner (in this case, the Mazda RX-8) you will begin the game in the Downtown section. This is the catch in Carbon the car you pick (more specifically, its class) determines the route you take through the game, and the unlocks that will be available to you. Your treasured BMW M3 GTR is totaled in the ensuing chase sequence, forcing you to pick a new starting car. As the player, you are returning to Palmont when Cross, now a bounty hunter, catches up to you.
